LODD Detroit SFF. Walter Harris - Engine 23 11/15/2008 : A veteran Detroit firefighter died early this morning and four others were injured while battling an arson blaze at a vacant house on the city’s east side. Walt Harris, 37, who was married and the father of six children, died after the roof collapsed on an attic in a house at Sheridan and Kirby. The collapse occurred after the crews had extinguished most of the blaze, and were beginning to mop up. Attempts to revive Harris at the scene and at a hospital were unsuccessful. Deliberate fires in vacant structures have long posed a problem for Detroit firefighters. Last year, more than half of the city's blazes were classified as suspicious, meaning investigators initially believed the fires were set or that there was no obvious cause, such as an electrical source. The area around Sheridan and Kirby is filled with vacant lots and abandoned homes, many of them scarred by fires. Harris joined the department in 1991, and had spent his entire career at the 109-year-old fire house at E. Grand Boulevard and Moran that houses Engine 23 and Squad 3. Faces of the Bravest - The Brotherhood : The job of a firefighter is one of the most dangerous professions around. Firefighting is a calling, it isn't just a job. Firefighters are a special breed of men and women going into a hostile atmostphere while others are running out. This career is attractive not primarily because of the salary or benefits. It is because there isn't a day that goes by that firefighters don't make a difference in someone's life by helping them in probably the most traumatic time of their life. The love amongst one another in the fire service is a Brotherhood. Sometimes it looks awkward in the eyes of the public when firefighters are seen standing around or in the firehouse between runs (calls). But when the tone alarm goes off and the companies turn out to respond, firefighters never know the destiny of their fate. When you see them at a fire, in the supermarket, on the street or you are passing your neighborhood firehouse take a brief moment to wish them well and to say thank you. In this gallery you will find the faces of the F.D.N.Y. Brotherhood that served and that are currently active in the F.D.N.Y. I would also like to share many photos of close friends that I lost on September 11th. I miss them all greatly and they will never, ever be forgotten.

E. Jefferson & Newport (2nd Alarm) : Engine 52, Engine 23 and Squad 3 were assigned to respond as relief to a 2nd alarm fire on Navahoe. Enroute on East Jefferson, Engine 52 came across a one story 100x100 commercial building fully involved and requested the box. A subsequent request for DPD was made for traffic control. Squad 3 was redirected to the fire. From what it looked like, the building exploded prior to fire department arrival. Bricks and pieces of the building were found 50-100 ft. in a vacant lot opposite the fire building.
